Introduction

S.O.S (Scheduled Oil Sampling) oil analysis programme is a tool which machine owners can use to help them manage their maintenance so their machines will Work more, Earn more, Last longer and Cost less to run.

The S.O.S programme differentiates Goughs from other after-sales oil analysis service providers in New Zealand, as Goughs is the only provider offering our customers a comprehensive oil analysis service in-house with the results available via the internet.

What is the S.O.S Program?

The S.O.S program emphasises equipment analysis, rather than oil analysis. While other programs get the most out of the oil, the S.O.S program gets the most out of the equipment.

Caterpillar has designed a fluid analysis program to detect wear particles and contamination in the fluids of your machinery. The findings are translated into machinery performance facts which help you make smart service decisions. These are important steps towards increased productivity, decreasing downtime and lower operating costs.

Our lab processes around 58 000 oil samples per year, making it the largest volume oil lab in New Zealand. Also Goughs' lab is the only one in NZ that aims to provide a same-day service. Samples received before 10 am are analysed, interpreted and the results available via the internet in 24 hours. Analysis results that indicate a serious problem (an 'alert') are emailed (or faxed) immediately to the client or servicing agent and followed up with a personal phone call to offer any further assistance that may be required.

Quality

The lab holds Verification NZ certification for providing a laboratory testing service to ISO9001:2000, and is registered for the supply of fluid analysis services and interpretation for condition maintenance programmes. Goughs' lab also regularly participates in the inter-laboratory testing program to ensure accuracy.

Investment in Technology

Maintaining a high-quality, fluid analysis laboratory service requires ongoing investment in equipment, systems and software. Since 2003, Goughs' S.O.S lab has seen a continual invested in new equipment, systems and software. There will be further investment in facilities and new equipment during the coming year.

Sampling Kits for Oil and Coolant

Goughs provides pre-paid sampling kits that can be purchased through any of the Goughs branches though-out New Zealand. These kits provide all consumables needed to take a sample, and the price includes the return postage, all standard tests, interpretation of the results and reporting back to you via the internet or post. We have a range of kits available from a single sample kit through to a bulk refill kit for 50 samples. We also supply sample pumps (disposable and long life) quick sampling valves and other accessories through our branches. Where Can S.O.S Be Used?

In any oil washed compartment and our service covers more than just Caterpillar vehicles and engines. Currently, over 40% of our samples are from non-Cat equipment or components such as industrial machinery, aircraft, racing cars, fishing vessels, pleasure craft, jet boats, helicopters, ski equipment, wind turbines etc. The laboratory is also certified for oil analysis on Turbomeca helicopter engines.
